What is a rosary?
It is a sacramental (sacred symbol and object) and a prayer honoring Mary. It has five sets of ten beads, each set being a decade (ten years)
What is sin, venial sin, and mortal sin?
Sin - intentional thought, word, or action that opposes the law of God
Venial Sin - sin that weakens a person's relationship with God
Mortal Sin - the most serious form of sin, can break a person's relationship with God
Virtues are...
habits that help us to live and make decisions according to our conscience
What are the Ten Commandments
1. I am the Lord your God: you shall not have strange gods before me
2. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain
3. Remember to keep holy the Lord's day
4. Honor your father and mother
5. You shall not kill
6. You shall not commit adultery
7. You shall not steal
8. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor
9. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife
10. You shall not covet your neighbor's goods
What is the Great Commandment?
To love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.
How does one become a Saint?
They are usually ordinary people known for either heroic virtue or the exemplary practice of Christian virtues
How do we get rid of Original Sin? How do we ask for forgiveness of sin?
We get rid of Original Sin through Baptism and go through the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation to seek forgiveness for our sins
What is Annunciation?
When the Angel Gabriel made the announcement to Mary that she was called to be the Mother of God
What is the New Commandment? (hint: it was in the lesson about the Great Commandment)
To love your neighbors as God has loved you
How do we decide whether something is morally right or wrong?
think about what you've been taught, think about what the possible consequences would be, does it agree with God's Commandments/Great Commandment, does it follow the church's teachings
What is Assumption?
It is the teaching that after her earthly life, Mary was taken into Heaven, body and soul, to be with Jesus
What is Original Holiness?
the state of goodness that humanity enjoyed before Adam and Eve chose to sin against God
What is Canonization?
A declaration by the Pope naming a person as a saint
What are the Theological Virtues?
faith, hope, and charity (love)
What is a way to praise God?
Practicing virtue, or living a morally good life
Why do we honor the Queenship of Mary on August 22?
Because she is as close to her Son in Heaven as she was when he lived on Earth
What was Jesus' sacrifice?
Through his death and resurrection he saved human beings from sin
What is Beatification?
The second step in the process of becoming a saint, when a person is recognized by the church as having brought a miracle through his/her prayers
What are the Gifts of the Holy Spirit?
wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the lord
What does each Cardinal Virtue mean?
Prudence - knowing what is right and good and choosing it
Temperance - keeping a balance in life
Justice - giving to God and to each person their due
Fortitude - showing courage, especially in the face of evil
How do you pray the rosary?
- hold the crucifix and pray the apostles creed
- say the Our Father, three Hail Mary's and a Glory Be
- each decade of the rosary is made up of an Our Father, ten Hail Mary's, and a Glory Be
- finish by praying Hail, Holy Queen
What type of sin is cheating?
Mortal sin
What are Prayers of Lamentation?
They are prayers people utilize to bring sorrow and anger to God in times of difficulty
What are the Fruits of the Holy Spirit?
charity, kindness, faithfulness, patience, joy, goodness, modesty, gentleness, peace, generosity, self-control, chastity
