With as much detail as you can describe, explain the birth of Islam. How did it come to be?

In a cave on Mount Hira (near Mecca), Mohammed declared that the angel Gabriel appeared to him and revealed to him a new religion which he afterwards taught his followers.

Describe why the Battle of Tours occurred and why it's significant.

The Battle of Tours occurred as a result of the encroaching Saracen army who was wanting to take over Western Europe in the name of Islam. They had already conquered much of Spain, when they found their way into the land of the Franks.

Charles Martel defeated the Saracens in this battle, establishing Christianity as the main religion of Western Europe and not Islam. Things could have been very different if the Muslims had been victorious.

a new group of Muslims that took control of much of the Islamic Empire. By 1100, the Seljuk Turks had seized more than half of the old Byzantine Empire.

Describe the difference between the Shiite and Sunni branches of Islam.

The branches were formed because of a disagreement about who should succeed Mohammed as the leader of Islam. Those who supported Abu Bakr, the first caliph chosen by the elders of Medina, became the Sunni. Those who supported Ali, Mohammed’s cousin and his daughter’s husband, became the Shiite.

In 622 A.D., Mohammed fled the city of Mecca for Medina. This "flight" proved significant in Islamic culture because it marks the beginning of the spread of Islam outside of the boundaries of Mecca. 

Also, this date marks the beginning of the modern era in the Islamic calendar. Instead of using the birth of Christ to count their years, Muslims use this date.

The Do-nothings were powerless kings of France who loved luxury and pleasure. The mayors of the palace were the ones who were actually ruling and had real power. They made policy and conducted wars.
