Who was the first to observe cells under a microscope? He coined the term "cells" after small rooms in which monks lived in at the time.
Robert Hooke

During DNA replication, what enzyme adds free nucleotides to a template strand of DNA to form a complementary DNA strand?
DNA polymerase

Substrates can only bind to which region of an enzyme?
Active site

An organism is autotrohpic, unicellular, and prokaryotic. You discovered that this organism lives in most aquatic environments. This organism most likely belongs to which kingdom of life?
Eubacteria

You discovered an organism that is unicellular, microscopic, hetertrophic, and is found in extremely acidic environments. This organism is most likely a part of which kingdom?
Archaea

Who was the first to observe living cells under the microscope?
Anton von Leeuwenhoek

What is the role of helicase in DNA replication?
1. untwist/unwind DNA and 2. unzip DNA
200
What is the name of the model that states substrates must fit perfectly into the active site of an enzyme in order for the enzyme to work?
Lock and Key Model

Provide two examples of cells that are haploid. What is the process by which humans make these cells?
sperm and egg; meiosis

You discovered a new species that engages in sexual reproduction, is heterotrophic, and motile for one phase of its life cycle. This species is most likely a part of which kingdom?
Animal

The statement below belongs to which cell theory? "All living things are made of cells."
Traditional Cell Theory

Arrange the following in chronological order: cytokinesis, interphase, mitosis
1. Interphase (DNA replication), 2. mitosis, 3. cytokinesis
300
Given what you know about helicase, is it possible for helicase to bind to hydrogen peroxide?
No! Substrate for helicase is DNA, not hydrogen peroxide.

Cell structure is related to.... Offer an example.
cell function

Of the 6 kingdoms of life, which kingdoms have prokaryotic cells?
Bacteria and Archaea
400
The recognition that cells come from pre-existing cells belongs to which cell theory? What is this process called?
Traditional Cell Theory. Cell Division
400
After cell division, two cells are formed. Compare and contrast the differences and or similarities between these newly formed cells.
They are identical!

In an experiment testing the reaction rate of catalase with hydrogen peroxide, Larry cannot afford to buy purified catalase from a research lab. Suggest TWO sources of catalase Larry can use in his experiment.
Catalase can be found in yeast and liver.

Veronica's kidney cell has 50 chromosomes. How many types of chromosomes does Veronica have in her egg cells?
25
500
Which kingdoms of life have prokaryotic cells?
Bacteria and Archaea

State the structure and function of red blood cells and neurons.
RBC: round and smooth, contains hemoglobin; carries oxygen and travels through blood vessels. Neurons: long and branched; transit electrical signals

Imagine that you're a doctor. One of your patients has liver cells that CANNOT undergo mitosis, but cytokinesis can still occur. Should you be concerned about your patient? Why or why not?
You should be concerned! Without mitosis, the nucleus does not divide. This means one of the daughter cells will have a nucleus and the other daughter cell will not have a nucleus.

Lactase is an enzyme that breaks down lactose, a molecule of milk. In an experiment, Barney accidentally boiled his solution of lactase, thinking it was water. Barney then added this heated solution of lactase to lactose. How do you think this will affect the reaction rate? Can lactase be reused? Why or why not?
No reaction. Lactase was denatured by the heat. Therefore, the shape of the active site on lactase has changed and cannot bind to lactose, the substrate.
