Why did President Andrew Jackson refuse to add Texas to the U.S.?
He was concerned that adding Texas as a slave state would upset the balance of slave and free states in the U.S. and he did not want a war with Mexico over Texas.
In the end, the U.S. paid Mexico $15 million for their northern territory and President Polk promised to protect the Mexican citizens living there. All of these details and the end to the war became official with the signing of this treaty.
