Reflexive Pronoun:

A reflexive pronoun is used when the subject and the object of the sentence are the same person or thing. It reflects the action back onto the subject.

  • Example: She made herself a cup of tea.
(In this case, "herself" refers back to the subject "She" and shows that she made tea for herself.)

Intensive Pronoun:

An intensive pronoun is used to emphasize the noun or pronoun it refers to. It does not change the meaning of the sentence if removed; it is only for emphasis.

  • Example: The CEO himself gave the presentation.
(Here, "himself" emphasizes that the CEO personally gave the presentation.)

Key Difference:

  • A reflexive pronoun is essential to the meaning of the sentence, as it shows the action is performed on the subject.

  • An intensive pronoun is not essential and merely adds emphasis to the noun or pronoun it refers to.
