In Landed, Sun thinks, “Now I have only my memory to get to America.” Explain what Sun means by this. Do you think this is fair?
Sun thinks this because he has to answer all the questions at Angel Island about his family with no help. He needs to do it without his notes, because if the officials see his notes, they will think that he is a paper son and might send him home. Before he left for his journey, he studied hard to know things like how many windows there are, which directions the doors face, and what each room is used for in his house.

Another hardship they faced was having to walk a really long way to Ethiopia. They worked together by leading small groups of boys and helping each other be brave. What was life like for the Lost Boys in the refugee camp? How might life be different for Garang in the United States?
Life was difficult for the Lost Boys in the refugee camp. Finding food became hard, people began to get sick and die. Others were too tired to go to school, or had to rotate between finding food and going to school. Even though Garang was trying to make it better, there was not enough for everyone. I think life might be different for Garang because he would have enough food and he would have a nice place to live.

Was immigration always a positive thing? Why or why not?
No, immigration was not always a positive thing. When Europeans came, they were competing with indigenous Americans for land. Immigrants often treated them badly or killed them. Also, Africans were forced to come to America and were enslaved when they got here. They had no freedom, like other immigrants did.
What was life like on Angel Island?
Life on Angel Island was difficult. You were often lonely because you were separated from others and all by yourself. It felt like a jail because you were locked up. Some immigrants were there for days, weeks, even months or years! It did not sound like an exciting start to a new life.
