Define fair trade.

Fair trade is a worldwide movement that aims to help farmers and producers in less economically developed countries (LEDCs). The term fair trade means that they receive a fair price for the goods that they produce. Goods that are produced and sold in support of these aims usually carry a fair-trade label. Many products, including coffee, sugar, tea, cotton, wine, bananas, and handicrafts, are traded this way.

Does eating burgers help reduce greenhouse gases? Explain.

Eating burgers, especially those made from beef, generally does not help reduce greenhouse gases. In fact, beef production is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions.

Here’s why:

  1. Methane Emissions: Cows produce methane, a potent greenhouse gas, during digestion. This process, known as enteric fermentation, releases large amounts of methane into the atmosphere.
  2. Land Use: Raising cattle requires a lot of land, often leading to deforestation. Trees absorb carbon dioxide, so cutting them down increases the amount of CO₂ in the atmosphere.
  3. Feed Production: Growing feed for cattle involves the use of fertilizers and machinery, both of which contribute to greenhouse gas emissions.
  4. Energy Use: The entire process of raising cattle, processing meat, and transporting it to markets consumes a significant amount of energy, much of which comes from fossil fuels.
