What are the three type of tectonic plate boundaries?
Transform, Divergent, and Convergent
What type of boundary is most likely to cause an earthquake?
Transform boundary
What types of plates and what type of boundary is involved when mountains are created?
continental-continental convergent plates
What is the name of the fault we live on?
San Andreas Fault
Look at the diagram. What type of boundary is represented?
Convergent - more specifically, oceanic-continental convergent boundary.
What type of plate boundary is most likely to create a continental rift?
divergent boundary between two continental plates
What type of plates and plate boundary causes volcanic island arcs?
oceanic - oceanic convergent plates
What is the name of the area near the Pacific Ocean where lots of tectonic plates meet that gets a very high amount of volcanos and earthquakes
Ring of Fire
Look at the diagram. What geological feature would be found at C?
A volcano
What geological process do scientists believe make the tectonic plates move?
Convection currents in the mantle of the earth.
What type of plates and plate boundary causes rows of volcanos on land by the coast?
oceanic- continental convergent boundaries
What is the name of the giant supercontinent (when all the continents were one)?
Pangea
Look at the diagram. What geological feature would be found at A?
A trench
What is the name of the scientist and theory of the continents spreading apart from one giant supercontinent?
Alfred Wegener - Continental drift
What type of plates and plate boundary causes mid-ocean ridges?
oceanic - oceanic divergent boundaries
What evidence did Wegener have that led him to develop his continental drift theory?
fossils, glacier/rock scraping marks, the fit and shape of the continents

What type of boundary is represented by L? What geological feature would likely be found there?
Divergent boundary between two oceanic plates
Seafloor spreading/mid-oceanic ridge.
Which type of plate is more dense, oceanic or continental?
Oceanic plates are more dense basalt rock. Continental plates, on the other hand, are made of less dense granite.
What type of plates and plate boundary area the East African Rift?

Continental - continental divergent plates
Using the words density, heat, and particles, describe convection currents in the mantle.
The mantle is heated by the core of the earth. As the particles closest to the core are heated, they become less dense and rise closer to the crust. Then, they cool and become more dense dropping back down closer to the core again. This cycle continues over and over.
Where would you find the OLDEST crust? 1, 2, or 3?

3
What is the name of the plastic like, viscous layer of the mantle?
asthenosphere
What is the only type of plate boundary that doesn't create/destroy the lithosphere? Why?
Transform - NO new crust is created or destroyed
Divergent boundaries allow for new sea floor or new continental crust.
Convergent boundaries allow for volcanic island arc, volcano formation, and mountain formation.
Why do the tectonic plates move in different ways with different boundaries?
The core heats the mantle unevenly.
Small temperature differences cause the convection currents to cycle in different directions. These move the plates in various ways.
(Remember the demo with the beaker half way on the hot plate with the red food dye?) :-)
