An adaptation is...

a trait that helps an organism survive in its environment.

100

What is coevolution? What is an example of this?

Occurs when two populations of organisms form a specialized relationship and thus change in response to each other.

Ex. Flowers and the insects that pollinate them.

If available, the body will always digest which macromolecule for energy first?

Carbs!!!

Which is the largest state in the United States of America?

Alaska

200

One of the biggest ways that a species evolves is because some organisms with some traits survive and reproduce better than others. This process is known as

Natural Selection

200

Which pattern of evolution results in one species splitting into many over time?

Divergent evolution--speciation

200

If a cell has 8 chromosomes, how many chromosomes will each of its daughter cells have after mitosis?

8

200

In Finding Nemo, what's the name of Nemo's mother?

Coral

Who developed the theory of natural selection? Where did they study this phenomena? What did he notice?

Charles Darwin, English Naturalist

Saw that different species of finches/tortoises/etc. lived on different islands and had specific characteristics for that island.

Developed his theory of natural selection to serve as the mechanism for how evolution occurs.

Organisms that live in similar environments, such as the ocean, often have similar adaptations. This is often due to..

convergent evolution

If a cell has 8 chromosomes, how many chromosomes will each of its daughter cells have after meiosis?

What other sport did Michael Jordan play professionally other than basketball?

Explain what is meant by the phrase, “Individuals don’t evolve, populations do".

Natural selection acts on traits that are heritable, not traits acquired in a lifetime. It is impossible for an individual to change their genes, thus only populations can evolve because only within populations can allele frequencies change over time.

Explain what gradualism is and use a real life example in your explanation.

Slow, constant changes over a period of time.

Ex: early primates evolved into the early human species

The products of photosynthesis are....

O2 and glucose

400

Which famous US document starts with ‘When in the course of human events…’?

Declaration of Independence

Evolution will NOT occur if: (name three)

Population is large. Must be random mating. No migration. No mutations. No natural selection.

If at least one of these conditions is NOT met, then the population is EVOLVING!

Given the following situation, identify adaptations of the organisms, state whether this is an example of convergent or divergent evolution, and EXPLAIN your choice with reasoning.

The red fox lives in mixed farmlands and forests, where its red color blends in with tree bark. The kit fox lives on the plains and in deserts, where its sandy color conceals it from predators. The ears of the kit fox are larger than the red fox to increase surface area to release heat. Similarities in structure indicate that the red fox and kit fox had a common ancestor.

Adaptations = red color vs. sandy color (depending on the environment)

Divergent evolution because common ancestor, different color due to evolving in different environments.

Based on our current understanding of evolutionary history, the first living cells to evolve on earth were simple, single-celled organisms called prokaryotes, or aka....

bacteria

What is the rarest blood type in humans?
