How do you find area? Tell us at least two ways!
1. You can find area by multiplying length times width.
2. You can also find area by counting the squares in the middle!
1. Is perimeter the outside or the inside of a shape?
2. How do you find perimeter of a shape?
1. OUTSIDE!
2. You add up all the sides!
What is a quadrilateral?
A shape with FOUR sides!
Draw a quadrilateral!
An American flag has a perimeter of 14 feet. One side of the flag is 3 feet long. What is the area of the flag?
Area= 12 square feet!
Miss Paige is wanting to put a picture in a picture frame. The length of the picture is 4 inches, and the width of the picture is 6 inches. What is the area of the picture?
The area of the picture would be 24 square inches!
4 x 6 = 24
Miss Paige was building a fence for her garden. The top and bottom were 10 feet long, and the sides were both 8 feet long. What is the perimeter of her garden?
To find perimeter, you add all the sides up!
10+10+8+8= 36 feet!
What is special about a square? Name 3 things!
1. They have all sides that are the same length!
2. They have 4 right angles.
3. They can be rectangles!
4. The are quadrilaterals and parallelograms!
A rectangle has a perimeter of 14 inches. Draw a rectangle where all sides add up to 14 inches!
Possible drawings could include..
1. 6 on the top and bottom, 1 on the sides.
2. 5 on the top and bottom, 2 on the sides.
3. 4 on the top and bottom, 3 on the sides.
Or the other way around!
Free space. :)
Yeehaw!
The area of a rectangle is 28 square units. If the length of the rectangle is 7 units, how many units is its width?
The width would be 4 units!
L x W = area
7 x ? = 28
? = 4!
A square has a perimeter of 40 centimeters. What is the length of each side?
HINT: Squares are perfect and all sides are equal!
The length of each side is... 10!
10+10+10+10= 40!
What shapes are parallelograms?
HINT: They have to be quadrilaterals!
1. Squares!
2. Rhombuses!
3. Rectangles!
A photograph has an area of 42. What is the width of the photograph? What is the length?
Draw a picture to help you!
L x W = area
? x ? = 42
6 x 7 = 42
OR 7 x 6 = 42 (commutative property!)
Width = 6
Length = 7
What is a parallelogram with four right angles and sides that are all the same length called?
A SQUARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A rectangular window in a door is 10 inches tall. If the area of the window is 90 square inches, how wide is the window?
The window would be 9 inches wide!
L x W = area
10 x ? = 90 square inches
? = 9 inches!
Mr. Hodges is making a garden where he can grow beans. He needs to put fencing around the beans so the squirrels don't get to them! The top and bottom are 12 feet long. The perimeter of the fencing is 30 feet altogether. What are the side lengths of the fencing?
To find perimeter we add all the sides up!
12+12=24
30-24=6
6/2=3!
Each side length is 3 feet long.
12+12+3+3=30 feet!
2. Is a trapezoid a parallelogram?
1. YES, a trapezoid is a quadrilateral!
2. NO, a trapezoid is not a parallelogram because the top and bottom are different lengths! (Check our google document for a picture!)
Steve wants to make a banner for the school play with an area of 8 square feet.
Draw 2 different rectangles that have an area of 8! Label the length and width!
2 x 4 = 8
1 x 8 = 8
:)
Jackson laid a stone patio in the shape of a rectangle. He used 49 square stones that measure 1 foot on each side. There are 7 stones on one side of the patio. How many stones are on the other sides?
L x W = Area
7 x ? = 49
? = 7!
Tina covers the floor of a room with carpeting. She uses carpet squares that measure one foot on each side. How many carpet squares does she need to cover a room that is 6 feet wide by 9 feet long?
L x W = area
9 x 6 = 54!
Bill wants to build a wooden railing around his square patio. The patio has an area of 25 square feet. Bill will put up the railing on 3 of the sides. How much wood does Bill need?
If the area is 25 feet, that means his square patio has a length of 5 feet and a width of 5 feet.
That means all sides of the patio are 5 feet!
If Bill is only putting railing up on 3 sides, we would add 5+5+5=15 feet. :)
Draw a shape that is a parallelogram and a quadrilateral!
Let's see your boards!
Miss Paige is building a fence for her dogs. She has 28 feet of fencing in all. Draw a fence with a perimeter of 28 feet!
Let's see those boards and side lengths!
Mary’s sandbox measures 6 feet by 3 feet. She decides to make it larger by adding a section which is 3 feet wide and 10 feet long. What is the area of the sandbox after the new section is built?
DRAW if it helps you!
1. Original sandbox area: 6 x 3 = 18
2. Added section of sandbox: 3 x 10 = 30
3. Adding both sandboxes together 18 + 30 = 48 feet!
