What is Ambulate?

What is exercise?
To bend
What is flexion?
To straighten.
What is extension?
Refers to all types of movement. Includes walking, movement in a bed, and transferring from a bed to a chair. Movements can be with or without assistance and with or without an appliance (chair, walker, cane, crutches, etc.).
What is mobility?
To rotate the joint inward
What is internal rotation?
When half of the body is paralyzed (right or left side).
What is hemiplegia?
– Movement towards the body.
What is Adduction?
To rotate the joint away or outward.
What is external Rotation
Loss of ability to move a part or all of the body
What is paralysis?
– To turn with your whole body, not twisting
What is pivot?
When a muscle decreases in size and strength. The muscle begins to waste away and become weak
What is Atrophy?
–Loss of the ability to move the lower part of the body and both legs
What is paralysis?
Range of motion exercises that the resident does by him or herself to improve his/her range of motion.
What is Active Range of Motion?
Paralysis of all four of the extremities and the trunk
What is quadriplegia?
When a resident is sitting in bed with the head of the bed at 60 to 90 degrees.
What is Fowler's position?
Movement away from the body.
What is Abduction?
The correct use and positions of the NA's body and muscles. Correct positions make the best use of strength to lift or move objects.
What is Body Mechanics?
Uses activity steps to increase the resident’s ability.
What is progressive mobilization?
Exercises that move the muscles and joints as far as they can without pain or discomfort.
What is range of motion?
Special equipment or devices used by the resident. Allows the resident to be more independent in managing their own ADLs. Examples include eating utensils altered to make them easier for residents to use. Canes and walkers are NOT considered this.
What is Adaptive Equipment?
When a muscle shortens and is unable to flex. The muscle freezes in position. Can occur when the patient is immobile.
What are Contractures?
Exercising the resident’s joint because he/she is unable to do it for themselves.
What is passive range of motion?
The correct position of the body for good posture. Provides for best functioning of all body systems.
What is Body Alignment?
A resident who has lost functional abilities due to injury or illness is assisted to their highest level of ability
