Summarize the whiskey rebellion.

The federal government passed a new tax in 1791 which taxed the colonists on items such as sugar, rum, tobacco and whiskey. Farmers in western Pennsylvania, many of them who fought in the Revolutionary War, were still struggling with attacks from Native American tribes at this time and felt that the federal government wasn't providing support. Violence against government tax collectors ensued. President George Washington peacefully tried to shut down the rebellion but he was ultimately forced to bring in a militia to shut down the protestors. The whiskey rebellion validated the constitution by proving that our government was strong.

How does democracy promote a market economy?

  • DEMOCRACY is centered on the power of the people. In government, the people have the power to decide how the government will run and how it will serve them.

  • A MARKET ECONOMY relies on the consumers and producers to set the prices. The people again have the power to make the decisions.

  • Democracy, which is all about letting the people decide and have a say, promotes an economy that gives freedom to the people.
