Energy cycles throughout an entire food web. Where do producers typically get their energy from?

The Sun

100

What is the Law of Conservation of Energy?

Energy cannot be created or destroyed (only transformed or transferred)

100

What is the difference between biotic limiting factors and abiotic limiting factors?

Biotic limiting factors involve other organisms, abiotic limiting factors are factors that do not involve other organisms.

100

What are you NOT going to do during the solar eclipse on Monday?

Look directly at the Sun or take pictures of the eclipse.

200

Grass > Rabbit > Fox > Hawk

What level of consumer is the Fox in this scenario?

Secondary Consumer

200

What is happening to the stored energy in gasoline if it is being used to power a car?

It is being transformed (from chemical energy into mechanical, thermal, light, and sound energy).

200

In nature, bees use the nectar from flowers as a source of food. While they are collecting this resource, pollen from the flowers cling onto the bees and is then transported and deposited at other flowers, which fertilizes the other flowers. What type of relationship is this an example of?

Mutualism

200

What material is going to be on Monday's test?

Everything covered in Unit 9 (food webs, energy transfer, and species relationships)

300

Insects are often consumed by small birds, and small birds are often consumed by snakes. If the local bird population were to develop a disease and go extinct, what would likely happen to the local insect and snake populations?

The insect population would likely increase, and the snake population would likely decrease.

300

LED light bulbs are 90% efficient, Fluorescent bulbs are 85% efficient, and Incandescent Filament bulbs are only 10% efficient. Which bulb outputs more energy?

None, they all output the same amount of energy.

300

Symbiotic relationships involve two species living together closely for an extended period of time. What are the three types of symbiotic relationships?

Mutualism, Commensalism, and Parasitism

300

When did you take the Unit 8 test?

There was no Unit 8 test.

400

Grass is eaten by Rabbits. Snakes eat Rabbits. Hawks eat snakes AND rabbits. What level(s) of consumer is the Hawk?

Secondary and Tertiary Consumer

400

In a hydroelectric dam, water flows past a generator that transforms the water's energy into a type of energy that can be stored and transported. What are the two primary forms of energy that are present in this interaction?

Mechanical > Electrical

400

Lions tend to hunt and eat other animals, like zebras. When a lion is unable to eat the entire zebra, hyenas will consume the zebra's remains after the lion has left. What kind of relationship is this an example of?

Commensalism

400

If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?

No. Sound is our brain's interpretation of sound energy. Our eardrums and brains convert the sound energy into chemical energy, which is interpreted by our brains as "sound". If no one was around to hear a tree fall, no sound would be produced, only sound energy in the form of waves, since there is not a brain nearby to transform the sound energy into sound.

500

Energy cycles throughout an entire food web. What is the role of a decomposer in a food web?

To recycle energy back through the food web.

500

Draw an Energy Transformation Diagram for a simple battery-powered flashlight.

Chemical > Electrical > Light + Heat

500

Give 3 examples of biotic limiting factors, and 3 examples of abiotic limiting factors.

Biotic: Food, mates, disease, competition, predation, parasitism

Abiotic: Water, space, drought, floods, weather, sunlight, altitude

500

What came first, the chicken or the egg?

The egg. Modern chickens would have evolved from their ancestors, which at some point would have not been considered chickens. Evolutionary adaptations occur at the point of meiosis. Therefore, the very first chicken must have been conceived already having the traits of a chicken, and that chicken would have began life after meiosis as an egg. The newly hatched chicken would be a chicken, and its parents would not be chickens.
