Chemical energy is a type of _______________ energy.

potential

100

Currently, what is the most common source of energy for electricity generation in the United States?

fossil fuels

100

Which of the following are associated with the Law of Conservation of Energy:

a. Energy cannot be created.

b. Energy cannot be destroyed.

c. Energy can transform from one type to another.

d. All of the above are correct.

d.  All of the above are correct.

100

Using the diagram provided, at what point will the roller coaster have the most kinetic energy?

point C

100

TRUE or FALSE.  Conservation of energy and conserving energy are the same thing.

False

200

What is the difference between potential and kinetic energy?  Provide an example to demonstrate this difference.

Potential energy is stored energy and kinetic energy is energy in motion.

(examples will vary)

200

With electricity generation, what is an energy source predominantly used to do?

spin a turbine

200

What is the ability to do work, move, or cause change known as?

energy

200

Objects of different masses are suspended from different heights.  Which combination of features will have the greatest gravitational potential energy?

greatest mass

highest height

200

TRUE or FALSE.  Burning any kind of fuel is harmful to the environment.

True

300

What type of energy is stored in fossil fuels?

chemical energy

300

Name 4 energy sources that are renewable.

solar

geothermal

hydroelectric

biomass

wind

tidal

300

What is the difference between renewable and nonrenewable energy?

Renewable energy has a continuous supply where as nonrenewable energy has a limited supply, and once it is gone, it is gone.

300

What does an electric motor need in order to work?

a battery

a magnet

a coil (something to spin)

300

___________________ energy is a highly efficient, renewable energy source, but it can change the river ecosystem that it dams up.

Hydroelectric
400

What type of energy is stored in food?

chemical energy

400

What is one disadvantage of tidal energy?

can harm wildlife

can only be used in certain areas

technology is still developing

equipment can be damaged easily

400

Compare and contrast a calorie and Calorie?

Both are units of measurement of the amount of chemical energy stored in a food, but Calories are 1000 calories.

400

Name two units used to measure energy.

Joules and calories

400

Name two ways to increase the amount of electricity a generator can create.

increase the mechanical force that drives the generator or increase the strength of the magnet involved

500

Explain the energy transfer involved when using a calorimeter to determine the amount of calories in a food sample.

When burning the food source, the chemical energy stored in the food was transformed into thermal energy.  The thermal energy heated the water in the aluminum can, which caused the temperature of the water to increase.

500

Which source of energy do you think is the best?  Provide evidence for your choice as well as the tradeoffs involved.

(answers will vary)

500

How are motors and generators related?

a motor requires electricity in order to create a mechanical force, where as a generator uses a mechanical force in order to generate electricity.

500

Use the data provided in order to determine how many Calories were in a cheeto.

8.2 Calories

500

When hitting a nail with a hammer, does all of the kinetic energy of the hammer transfer to the nail? Explain your answer in terms of energy transfer.

No.  The kinetic energy of the hammer moving transfers to the nail causing it to go into the wood.  However, the energy transfer from hammer to nail is not 100% efficient.  Some of the kinetic energy is transformed into sound and thermal energy as well.
