What is... One person who took advantage of the growth of railroads was George Pullman. The way that Pullman took advantage was by putting his own townspeople through suffering. Due to the fact that he ran his own industrial town, many of the workers had to live there. They didn't stay in the town for free. Some of the disadvantages that came with living there was the increasing rental cost, long work hours, and being underpaid.
