When does the snow at Santa's workshop to partially melt the most? And why?

Summer or June 21st or July-August

100

Which layer of the atmosphere has the least water vapor?

Thermosphere

100

In degrees, how wide is the average time zone ?

15 degrees

100

What happens to temperature as a cold front passes over you?

The temperature decreases.

100

Which current moves cool water around Antarctica?

Antarctic Circumpolar Current

200

When looking at an isobar map, where would wind speeds be the strongest?

Areas with high pressure gradient differentials or isobar lines close together

200

Water evaporates the fastest when what conditions are present?

Warm temperatures (sunny, or low pressure), low humidity, and high or fast winds.

200

How did Earth form it's first atmosphere?

Outgassing

200

Earth radiates which wavelength of light that is then absorbed by greenhouse gases?

Infrared wave lengths

200

What is the Orographic Effect?

Moist warm air moving over mountains will condense and precipitate on the windward side. By the time the air makes it over the mountains it is very dry and can create arid (desert) climates

300

If the wet bulb temperature is 27 degrees Celsius and the dry bulb temperature is 30 degrees Celsius, what is the relative humidity?

79%

300

Draw the water cycle

Retention (oceans, lakes), evaporation, precipitation, runoff, retention

OR

Retention (oceans, lakes), evaporation, precipitation, infiltration, transpiration or retention

300

When does a solar eclipse occur?

When the moon is in between the Sun and the Earth and blocks the suns light as observed from earth.

300

At what latitudes do global air circulation create high pressure zones with cool and dry air?

90 degrees and 30 degrees Latitude

300

Define the major axis of an ellipse.

The line passing through the two farthest apart points on the orbit and passes through both foci.

400

Describe the wind patterns of air as it moves between high and low pressure systems

In the Northern Hemisphere, wind travels clockwise away from high pressure and counterclockwise into low pressure system.

Remember "Hop over from high and crawl under to low"

400

What is the moderating effect of the ocean?

Locations near water then to have less fluctuation in their yearly temperature.

400

Why is Polaris called the North Star?

It is always at the circumpolar north pole, and does not appear to rotate with other stars.

400

What are the three ingredients for a hurricane?

Warm Water

Low Pressure

Wee bit of Coriolis Effect

400

Differentiate between a Sea Breeze and a Land Breeze and explain why they occur.

During a Sea Breeze the land is warmer during the day so the air rises. Cool air over the water blows in towards shore where the low pressure is currently located. At night, the water cools more slowly and is warmer than the land. The cool air over the land moves out to sea to where the warm air is rising creating a land breeze.

500

What happens to the trade winds, ocean currents, ocean temperatures and pressure systems during a La Nina.

Trade winds are stronger, making the Equatorial currents stronger. They push more warm water west. Water around SE Asia becomes warmer than normal and they get more rain because of stronger low pressure. Water around South America's West Coast is cooler than normal and they experience droughts due to stronger high pressure.

500

Explain how to use Polaris to find your latitude.

First, look north. Measure the angle of Polaris' height above the horizontal. That angle is your latitude. If you can't see Polaris you may be in the Southern Hemisphere.

500

While looking south while standing at 42 degrees N, what is the height of the sun at solar noon on the March 21st, June 21st and December 21st?

March 21st = 48 degrees

June 21st = 71.5 degrees

December 21st = 24.5 degrees

What are the phases of the moon? Draw how each phase appears from earth.

New Moon, Waxing Crescent, 1st Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full moon, Waning Gibbous, 3rd Quarter, Waning crescent
