Three brothers buy a device for $30, each paying $10. Later, the manager informs them that the device is discounted to $25. The cashier gives them $5 back, but unsure how to split it evenly, he gives each brother $1 and keeps $2 for himself (the cashier).

Now, each brother has effectively paid $9, totaling $27. If you add the $2 the cashier kept, it seems like there should be $29. Where is the missing dollar?

1. The brothers initially paid $30.

2. After the discount, they effectively paid $27 ($9 each).

3. This $27 includes the $25 for the device and the $2 kept by the cashier.

There's no missing dollar; the $2 is part of the $27, not in addition to it.
