It is unusual to background check independent contractors, but we can do it if requested, however we can only background check the owner of the business. If Subscriber enrolls in Upwork Payroll, Upwork’s Employment Provider will run a background check on Freelancers who will be hired via Upwork’s Payroll Services.

Our freelancers have been put through a series of screenings to ensure you’re working safely & securely
((i) Upwork screens Freelancers against the United States Office of Foreign Assets Control’s (OFAC) Specially Designated Nationals list, OFAC’s Consolidated Non-SDN list and the FBI’s Most Wanted list and does not allow persons appearing on any of these lists to join the Platform; (ii) the Platform checks the IP address of every Freelancer attempting to register for or log into the Platform and blocks further action if the IP address is from a sanctioned country/region; and (iii) Upwork performs ID verification checks if a Freelancer appears on Upwork’s suspicious activity reports. Also, all of our payment partners also screen freelancers for suspicious activity and sanctions lists, so users are essentially screened twice for potential money laundering/fraudulent activity.")
