Montessori at its foundation is individualized, so students who need more support and learning specific to language will receive it as part of their individualized learning plan. In addition, because the Montessori prepared environment provides multiple entry points into a given learning objective, ELL students have more opportunities to access content. Design challenges provide ELL students authentic opportunities to apply and practice their language skills in collaborative settings.
How is the UMCS model appropriate for ELL?

Montessori as a powerful tier 1 intervention

Why Montessori is an effective model for Special Education services delivery
What is Montessori creates individualized learning plans for all children; multi-age classrooms provide a range of materials and curricula to address students who are behind and students who are ahead; the Montessori materials provides multiple entry points to a given lesson or learning objective; the prepared environment provides a balance of freedom and structure and implicitly teaches time and space management, self management, and personal accountability; the self-directed environment allows the teachers to provide students direct instruction in their zones of proximal development, ensuring lessons and learning are targeted and appropriate

Our theory of action around students who are academically behind...

500
Why Montessori is in perfect alignment with serving the whole child...
What is it's a model that was originally designed around child development research - that pays attention to how children interact, learn and evolve as they mature - their natural cycles... that explicitly trains teachers in this development and aligns curricula with this development... that explicitly pays attention to what is happening to a child as they grow socially, emotionally, physically, academically

How UMCS teachers will know how to do all of this...

How UMCS will serve the needs of low incidence special education students who may require very costly services
What is partnership with other charters in the EDCOE SELPA to more efficiently support children with low incidence disabilities; a strong regular education program that effectively serves students with low incidence disabilities in a mainstream/inclusion setting with targeted support; maintaining a high level of reserves to support these students.
