A technician on duty has a critical Hgb result for a inpatient. She knows that policy states a critical result must be delivered to an RN/provider within 30 minutes. She has called the floor to speak with someone multiple times, but cannot get in touch. she leaves a message and asks for a call back. After 1 hour goes by she receives a call back. What can the technician do to protect  herself in case of an audit in the laboratory?

The technician should always document in the LIS  system what has happened. The patient cannot see this documentation but providers and other caregivers can.

For example: Critical Hgb obtained in the lab at 1530. I called the floor at 1540 and 1550 with no answer. At 1550 I left a message for the RN/ provider on duty to return the call for a pending critical. Call back received at 1630, critical result called to and reiterated by Jill, Rn.
