Hearst and Pulitzer were in charge of the two major newspapers. In order to sell and promote their product, they participated in yellow journalism. Exaggerating the news to gain readers and support for their cause: supporting Cubans against their Spanish rulers. No direct lies, but only use information to anger the public. Hearst published the de Lome letter that criticized President McKinley as well as blamed the Spanish for attacking the Maine and killing Americans.
