Magna Carta
Written by Thomas Jefferson, this declared that no person could be forced to attend a particular church or be required to pay for a church with tax money.
Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom
This established the Northwest Territory and created a system for bringing new states into the Union. It also protected civil liberties, required that public education be provided in new areas, and banned slavery within the Territory.
Northwest Ordinance of 1787
This Virginian wrote about how the closing of the British West Indies seriously hurt the US economy.
James Madison
A period of low economic activity combined with a rise of unemployment.
Depression
Pass in 1689, it declared the supremacy of the Parliament. It kept the king/queen from changing laws without Parliament's consent.
The English Bill of rights
The right to vote.
Suffrage
A territory that included what is now Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin.
Northwest Territory
A British magazine called the US this after states did not cooperate in trade matters once Britain closed their ports to them.
Dis-United States
This state refused to print worthless paper money. Instead it tried to pay war debts by collecting taxes on land which was very hard for farmers who eventually began revolting.
Massachusetts
This was a philosophical movement that emphasized the use of reason to examine old ideas and traditions.
Enlightenment
Passed by the Second Continental Congress, these made up the new national constitution and made Congress the single branch of national government.
Articles of Confederation
When a population within the NW Territory reached this number, it could draft its own constitution and ask to join the Union.

He was a philosopher who believed that a social contract existed between political rulers and the people they ruled.
John Locke
The Articles of Confederation made this the single branch of national government, but limited its power. Each state had 1 vote. This body could settle conflicts among states, issue coins, borrow money and make treaties.
Congress
This is the year that Britain closed ALL of its ports to US ships so we could no longer travel and trade with them. The US army had dissolved by then also.

This was an uprising of farmers to protest high taxes and heavy debt and was led by Daniel Shays.

He argued that the only way to achieve liberty was through the separation of governmental powers.

This occurs when there are increased prices for goods and services combined with the reduced value of money. This can happen when too much paper money is printed.
Inflation
This is where a national convention took place in September 1786 to talk about economic problems and ways to change the Articles of Confederation.

Annapolis
This is a set of basic principles and laws that state the powers and duties of the government.
Constitution
This set up a system of surveying and dividing western lands to raise money for paying debt. The land was split into townships with lots. Lots were set aside for schools and veterans. The rest were sold.
Land Ordinance of 1785
Spanish officials closed this in 1784 to US shipping which meant western farmers and merchants could no longer use the river to send goods to eastern and foreign markets.
Mississippi River
In this state the legislature printed large amounts of money worth very little. Creditors were upset and fled the state to avoid being paid back with worthless money.
Rhode Island
This is where the Constitutional Convention was held in May 1787 to revise the Articles of Confederation and where the US Constitution would be created.
Philadelphia
