Boat would arrive, doctors would board and quickly examine people to see if there were any obvious cases of illness. People on boats would disembark and be brought to Ellis Island on a ferry where they would then undergo another medical exam (chalk markings), a legal exam, before getting their documents. Then, they would be able to leave.
