The Domino Theory was described the Korean War, that if South Korea fell to the Communists, the other free states of Southeast Asia would fall to Communism as well. The US didn't want that to happen, so they helped South Korea to try to prevent that from happening.

What started the war?
The French had control over Vietnam and the Vietnamese people didn't like being treated as second class citizens. They revolted against the French, causing war to break out. The US helped the French by giving them money and support, this only made the Vietnamese mad at the us and caused war to break out against us.

You could picture it by thinking: "The Vietnamese had no experience in playing dominoes - their culture was one more of checkers and chess. The US had been playing dominoes for a while. As a result, we were better at dominoes. The Vietnamese quickly understood that they couldn't beat us in a domino match, so they gave up." This would mean that the US would have to be stronger in order to get their point across to the Vietnamese and that they would need our help if they wanted a unified country

After over two years, both sides signed an armistice, or a cease fire on July 27, 1953. The agreement made a new boundary near the 38th parallel and gave South Korea more land. They also created a 2-mile-wide demilitarized zone that still exists today
