What happened in the Nullification Crisis?

John C. Calhoun, VP at the time, said that the tariff of abomination was unconstitutional and therefore nullified. Jackson said the the states will obey whatever the cost. Calhoun threatened secession. Clay compromises and lowers the tariff so that secession does not happen. Narrowly escaped a civil war.

Explain Texas's entry into the Union (it was a long process).

Frontiersmen bought land from Mexico, they eventually fought for their independence from Mexico first at the battle of the Alamo and then kidnapped Santa Anna as a hostage in exchange for independence. They applied to the US Union, BUT they wanted to be a slave state so the US said, No. Eventually when another state applied as a non-slave state, Texas was allowed to join as a slave state.
