What is Nationalism?
The practice of rewarding political supporters with government jobs, often used during Jackson's presidency.
What is the Spoils System?
A social movement aimed at reducing or eliminating the consumption of alcoholic beverages.
What is the temperance movement?
The act of freeing people from slavery or oppression.
What is emancipation?
An 1820 agreement admitting Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state, while banning slavery north of a set latitude in future territories.
What is the Missouri Compromise?
An 1832 Supreme Court decision stating that Georgia laws had no force within Cherokee territory, affirming tribal sovereignty.
What is Worcester v. Georgia?
A widespread religious revival movement in the early 19th century that emphasized individual salvation, moral reform, and evangelical outreach.
What is the Second Great Awakening?
A leading women's rights activist who co-organized the Seneca Falls Convention and co-authored the Declaration of Rights and Sentiments.
Who is Elizabeth Cady Stanton?
Transformation marked by mechanized manufacturing and new energy sources.
What is the industrial revolution?
The nickname given by Southern critics to the Tariff of 1828, which placed high duties on imported goods and was seen as benefiting Northern manufacturers at the South’s expense.
What is the Tariff of Abominations?
The act of peacefully disobeying unjust laws, as advocated by Thoreau in protest of slavery and other issues in America
What is civil disobedience?
Formed by Clay and Webster, in opposition of "King Andrew" Jackson
What is the Whig Party?
Machine that greatly increased the speed of cotton processing and expanded the profitability of cotton farming (and therefore slavery)
What is the cotton gin?
The belief that a state has the right to invalidate, or refuse to enforce, a federal law it deems unconstitutional.
What is nullification?
A document modeled on the Declaration of Independence, presented at the Seneca Falls Convention, demanding equal rights for women.
What are the Declaration of Rights and Sentiments?
A philosophical movement emphasizing intuition, nature, individual conscience, and the spiritual over material concerns.
What is transcendentalism?
A national economic plan that included tariffs, a national bank, and federally funded infrastructure projects. (made by Henry Clay)
What is the American System?
State banks selected by the U.S. Treasury (but mainly Andrew Jackson) to receive federal deposits after the closure of the national bank.
What are "pet banks"?
A leading white abolitionist known for his uncompromising stance against slavery and as the founder of The Liberator.
Who is William Lloyd Garrison?
Loyalty to the interests of one’s own region or section of the country rather than the nation as a whole.
