- The idea that a country should get rich by selling more goods than it buys and by keeping control of trade
- Example: You sell lemonade to your friends but never buy it from them so you can earn more than you spend
Battle of Bunker Hill (1775)
- Cause: Britain wanted higher ground near Boston to control the city
- Winner: Britain (Lot of casualties on their side)
- Significance: Even though they lost, the colonists still put up a really good fight
Battle of Yorktown (1781)
- Cause: Washington and French forces cornered British army at Yorktown, Virginia (This happened by the sea, cutting off escape for the British)
- Winner: Colonists and French
- Significance: Last major battle that led to British surrender

- Britain allowed the colonies to govern themselves and trade freely as long as they stayed loyal and obeyed rules
Battle of Long Island (1776)
Cause: Britain wanted to capture New York to split the colonies
Winner: Britain
Significance: Britain gained control and forced the revolutionaries to retreat

Battle of Trenton (1776)
Cause: Washington did a surprise attack on the British in New Jersey by crossing the Delaware river on Christmas Night

Significance: One of the first major victories and boosted American morale
Decree of Sanctuary
An a rule proposed by Spain that would free fleeing slaves from English colonies but only if they converted to Catholicism and did an oath of loyalty to Spain
Battle of Saratoga (1777)
Cause: British General Burgoyne tried to cut off New England from the other colonies but was surrounded and forced to surrender
Winner: Colonists
Significance: Turning point of the war and convinced France to ally with the colonists
