Kayla is an RBT who has been working with young children with autism for about 2 years. At a recent family gathering Kayla was telling her aunt about her job at a big ABA company. Kayla’s aunt is so proud of her and tells her good friend, who has a son with autism, about Kayla’s new role. Kayla’s aunt gives the friend Kayla’s phone number when the friend says she doesn’t think her son really has autism and that she isn’t sure this ABA stuff is really working. The aunt’s friend calls Kayla and begins describing her son to Kayla. She then asks Kayla if she can come meet her son and tell her if she thinks he really has autism. When Kayla tells her that is outside the scope of her role she then asks if Kayla can come work with her son on the weekends, when she is not at her weekday job. She promises to pay her much more than she is making at her ABA company and tells Kayla she’d like for her to use her skills to combine ABA and Rapid Prompting Method (RPM).  The parent also tells Kayla she’ll train her in RPM and that she will have much more autonomy than she has at her current ABA company. Kayla has recently started to feel a bit stifled in her growth at her current company and likes the idea of autonomy, flexibility in her schedule, and more money.
