What is the simple past tense and when do we use it?

Simple past tense is the "normal" way of bending verbs in the past tense. We use it when we are talking about something that is routine, happens regularly or something that is general. Or when u simply want to talk about something that happened.

What is the progressive past tense and when do we use it? 

Progressive past tense is made by bending "to be" in the simple past tense and adding the given verb in its "ing-form" 

We use it when talking about something that was short-lived.
