What are the two types of macular degeneration?

Dry and Wet

100

What are the symptoms?

  • Cloudy or blurred vision

  • Faded colors

  • Can’t see well at night

  • Lights seem too bright

  • See halos around lights

  • See double

  • Frequent change of eye prescription for glasses or contacts

100

What are the types?

- Open angle

- Closed angle

100

What does Diabetic Retinopathy cause?

  • Causes blindness and vision loss in people with diabetes, affects the blood vessels in the retina

200

What is the difference of wet and dry degeneration?

Wet- 10-15% of cases are considered wet/exudative

Dry-majority are considered dry/atrophic

200

what are the risk factors?

  • Have certain health problems

  • Smoke

  • Too much consumption of alcohol

  • There’s a family history of it

  • Eye injury, eye surgery, or radiation treatment on your upper body can increase risks

  • Lot of time in the sun

  • Take steroids for medicinal use

200

What are the symptoms?

  • Starts off when no symptoms which is why people with it don’t know they have it

  • Will slowly start to lose peripheral vision, central vision, and eventually will be blind

200

What are the symptoms?

  • Early stages usually don’t show symptoms although some people may notice a change in their vision

  • In the later stages blood vessels will start to bleed and you will start to see dark floating spots. It is important to get treated right away if this happens, because scars can form and the blood vessels can start bleeding again and may potentially get worse.

300

What is the cause of macular degeneration?

no specific cause, but can be hereditary or environmental

300

Why do they happen majority of the time?

  • age and the lens getting cloudier with age

300

What are the Risks?

  • Over the age of 60

  • African American and over the age of 40

  • Have history of glaucoma in your family

300

What are the risks?

  • Anyone with diabetes is at risk

  • Increases the longer you have diabetes

  • Pregnant women who have diabetes are at a higher risk

400

What are the risk factors?

Age. genetics, race, smoking, diet

400
What are prevention mannerisms?
  • Wear sun glasses or eye protection when out in the sun

  • Protect eyes from injuries such eye pokes

  • Don’t smoke or quit smoking

  • Healthy diet

  • Cataracts can be trea

400

What are the treatments?

medicine, laser treatment, surgery

400

What are the causes?

- high sugar levels

  • Starts when sugar in your blood goes to the tiny blood vessels that go to your retina

  • These blood vessels then begin to get blocked, leak fluid, or even bleed leading to your body making new ones that won’t work as well

500

EXPLAIN the stages of Macular degernation

  • Sub-clinical - happens to most people later in life, this is before any physical or visible changes to the macula, lose the ability so adapt to dark surroundings

  • Early - most do not experience vision loss at this stage, regular eye exams are important at this stage especially if there is more of a risk factor, diagnosed by presence of medium-sized drusen

  • Intermediate - some vision loss but not much at this stage, comprehensive eye exams are needed with specific tests to look for larger drusen in the retinas

  • Late - vision loss is noticeable due to “wet” or “dry” degeneration

500

How can they be treated?

  •  making eye healthy choices in younger years, new glasses or contacts can help, or surgery if it begins to interfere with everyday activities

500

what is the difference in the two types of Glaucoma?

  • Open-angle - more common type of glaucoma, happens naturally where the eye doesn’t drain fluid as well causing damage to the optic nerve

  • Closed angle - happens when the iris is close to the drainage angle in the eye and the drainage angle eventually gets fully blocked off

500

what are the treatments?

injections, laser treatment, surgery
