Why/How did Islamic Calligraphy originate? 

Islamic calligraphy was originally a tool for communication, but with time, it began to be used in artwork and architecture. Its evolution into these major roles reflected the early Muslims’ need to avoid, as their beliefs required, figures and pictorials that were used as idols.

Originally, Islamic calligraphy would take verses from the Qur'an and present them as art, as a means for converting people to Islam around the time following the prophet Muhammad. But it encompasses more than Qur'anic verses now.

Capitalism: Capitalism is an economic system based on the private ownership of the means of production and their operation for profit.  

Communism: Communism is a type of government as well as an economic system. In a Communist system, individual people do not own land, factories, or machinery. Instead, the government or the whole community owns these things.

How were Renaissance artists trained? Describe the process. 

Artists from this period would apprentice for a master for a given period of time. They would often be family/friend relationship previously with the master. While this led to the artist having a clear pathways to eventual success, it also led to nepotism and abuse of the artist (including work theft)

Hurufiyya and Calligraffiti: The Hurufiyya movement is an aesthetic movement that emerged in the second half of the twentieth century amongst Muslim artists, who used their understanding of traditional Islamic calligraphy within the precepts of modern art. Calligraffiti emerged from this movement.

What is abstract expressionism? What is socialist realism? How do they relate to communism and capitalism? 

 Abstract Expressionism: a development of abstract art that originated in New York in the 1940s and 1950s and aimed at subjective emotional expression with particular emphasis on the creative spontaneous act. 

 Socialist Realism: Socialist realism is a style of idealized realistic art that was developed in the Soviet Union and was the official style in that country between 1932 and 1988. This art reinforced class consciousness, propagandized the state, and was often easier to interpret.

How did art change from the dark ages to the renaissance? How did Renaissance era artists try and depict "God"? 

Artists adopted a humanistic approach to depicting the divine, centering human reaction/engagement with their god. This was different than previous depictions of god and man, which would often depict God as light or a hand, whereas God was now given a human form, and would interact with men in an observable world background.
