When something involves hard work and struggle.

When a past event that interrupts the current/forward action of a story.
When the story gets interrupted by something from the past.
Abolish
To get rid of; put an end to.
"Slavery was abolished"; we got rid of slavery, stopped allowing it, and got rid of it completely.
Manufacturing (Manufacture)
Manufacture = to make something (like building or producing something).
Manufacturing = the *process* of making things from raw materials at a large scale (a lot at a time, big batches).
Courier
Someone who delivers messages or packages. ESPECIALLY for the military or government.
Dialect
A certain form of a language that gets spoken in a certain area, or by a certain group of people.
Describes activities of people who are members of a country.
Secede
When something wants to break away from something else; when something is combined but a part wants to become its own thing.
"They want to secede from us"; they want to break way from us and become their own separate thing.
Landmark
A part of the "landscape", or scene, that is super easy to see and recognize.
"The Statue of Liberty is a famous landmark of New York City."
Tacitly
When something is done in a way that isn't expressed directly or said out loud. Kind of like "implied", or hinted at without saying it.

Union
Northern states (like New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey) that stayed TOGETHER, under a single government.
Aliens
People living in a country who aren't officially citizens.
Casualty
When a person is killed or wounded.
"We experienced a casualty during the battle (one of our soldiers died)."
Kin
Family.
"You are my kin (you are part of my family)."
Industrial
"Industrial jobs" are jobs where people work in factories, making things to sell.
Confederate
SOUTHERN states that separated from the United States, or the "union" (as a whole, united together).
Idle
When something is not active, working, or ready to do.
Think of a phone or a laptop; when you leave the screen on for too long without touching it, it goes idle, and the screen dims or shuts off because you aren't touching it.

Severe physical or mental suffering.

"Agricultural jobs" are jobs where people work on farms harvesting crops to sell.

The system we use for money and producing/selling items.
Metaphor
A group of words that compare two things by saying "is" , or WITHOUT saying "like" or "as".
