Creed

Creed comes from the Latin word credo, "I believe". It is a statement of our beliefs as Chiristians (such as the Apostles' Creed or Nicene Creed).

Martyr

A witness to the truth of the Faith, in which the person endures even death to be faithful to Christ.

Incarnation

The truth that God became man. The Incarnation refers to the conception and birth of Jesus the Son of God who became man in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Sacrament

A visible sign given by Jesus in order to give us Santifying Grace. There are seven sacraments

Venial Sin

An offense against the holy law of God in a small matter. Venial sins weaken our relationship with God and are dangerous to our spiritual well-being.

Marks of the Church

The four special signs that point out the true Church of Jesus Christ. These four marks are found in the Nicene Creed as one, holy, catholic, and apostolic. Only in the Catholic Church can all four of these marks be found.

Patron Saint

The saints after which we are named at Baptism and Confirmation. THese saints pray for us in a special way and help[ us reach heaven. We should learn about our patron saints and try to love Goad as they did.

Paschal Mystery

This term comes from the Hebrew word for "Passover", a feast Jews celebrated in rememberance of their liberation from Egypt. The Last Supper was a Passover meal Jesus celebrated with his Apostles. So "Paschal Mystery" refers to the suffering, death, and Resurrection of Jesus by which we are saved from our sins.

Transubstantiation

The word we use to describe the changing of bread and wine into the very Body and Blood of Christ.

Mortal Sin

A serious offence against the law of God, which destroyes the sanctifying grace in our souls. For a sin to be mortal, three conditions must be present; 1) the action must be seriously wrong, 2) we must know that it is seriously wrong, 3) we must do it freely, without anyone or anything forcing us to do it. It is important to confess such sins as soon as possible and avoid whatever leads us to commit these sins.

Pentecost

The special feast of the Holy Spirit. It recalls the coming of the Spirit upon the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Apostles. We celebrate Pentecost fifty days after Easter.

Hypostatic Union

This is the mystery that in Christ the divine and human nature are united in the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity. Jesus is fully God and fully man.

Seal of Confession

The guarantee that the priest to whom one confesses one's sins will never reveal confessed sins to anyone.

Mercy

The loving kindness God has for mankind. Because God is merciful, he forgives us our sins and brings us to heaven. Christ commands each one of us to be merciful to others, forgiving them whatever wrongs they have done to us.

The Gospel

The Gospel (good news) is the news that we are freed from sin an able to enter heaven. This has been accomplished by Jesus's death and Resurrection. The Gospel is also good new because it reveals the truth to us.

Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit

These are seven supernatural powers we receive at Baptism which are strengthened at Confirmation. They are wisdom, understanding, knowledge, counsel, fortitude, piety, and fear of the Lord.

Supernation help from God in which he inspires us to good and avoid evil. The desire to pray and help others are examples of actual graces.

Sign of Confirmation
