When do we normally suspect poisoning has occurred?
When there is a sudden onset of illness in a previously healthy animal, poisoning is sometimes suspected.
According to the Officer SOP, what should an officer NOT consume while on duty?
While on duty, animal control personnel will not consume any alcoholic beverages (on duty includes breaks).
When should you scan an animal for a microchip?
EVERY SINGLE TIME! - After impounding the animal, scan the animal for a microchip.
** If the animal to be scanned is vicious or hard to handle, it might be necessary to ask for help from the kennel staff or kennel supervisor.

Upon arrival to a call dispatched by 911
What usually accompanies an injury and often needs to be treated first in some cases?
Shock - Shock usually accompanies injury, and the degree of shock is usually in relation to the degree of the injury. Often, it is necessary to treat an injured animal for shock before dealing with the injury.
What types of poising agents do we normally see in the field?
Rodenticides, weed killers, snail killers – things used to deter pests
When is it NOT acceptable for a break to be taken while on shift?
Breaks will not be taken within the first hour or last hour of an officer’s shift.
What is the purpose of a live animal trap?
Traps are used to control animals at large that cannot be captured or controlled by any other means. Traps should capture the animal unharmed.
At locations that do not have an apparent address, how does an officer relay their location?
At locations where addresses are not apparent, officers will give the nearest cross street.
What is the treatment for an animal suffering from a heatstroke?
TREATMENT - Immerse the animal in cool water or apply cold water liberally with a hose. After the body temperature returns to normal, the animal should be confined to a cool, quiet area.
When does RED SQUILL affect animals?
Animals may be poisoned by ingestion of a rodent killed by the substance.
** An animal may be poisoned with strychnine by ingesting a rodent that has been killed by strychnine as well
What are some functions of Animal Control Services?
The following are some of the overall functions of the Agency:
● Enforces county Ordinance.
● Responds to animal related complaints.
● Conducts investigations of cruelty and problem situations.
● Investigates animal bite cases ensuring that biting animals are properly
vaccinated and quarantined and arranges for rabies tests when appropriate.
● Assists in censes animals to help identify and return lost pets to their owner.
● Provides and services humane traps for bite cases, aggressive animals and stray
feral
● Patrols for stray animals.
● Provides rescue response to animals in danger.
● Performs community outreach activities, speaking to school classes, community
associations, civic organizations, etc.
● Participates in community meetings as part of an overall educational program.
Where do you record the microchip number?
You must record this chip identification number on your narrative and include it in the impound information, animal card and complaint narrative.
When should you use the 10 Code 10-8?
After completing a call and to inform 911 communications that you are "in service."
What severe condition must receive immediate attention, no matter what other injuries are present?
Hemorrhage - Heavy or uncontrolled bleeding from a cut, bruise or compound fracture.
What chemical is used to kill snails - the substance is attractive to dogs and cats as it has a sweet taste.

What are the general symptoms of a fracture?
SYMPTOMS - Pain and swelling at the fracture site. If the fracture is in a leg, the animal will generally be unwilling to use the leg for support. With vertebral fractures, the animal may be paralyzed.
What is the treatment for animals with a FULL stomach after ingesting ANTU (rodenticide)?
Animals with a full or partially filled stomach when ingestion occurs suffer from rapid weakness, pulse is rapid but faint and body temperature declines. Animals with a full or partially filled stomach usually ingest fatal quantities before the animal vomits.
