The Americans wanted to assert themselves as a fully independent nation. They wanted to be treated like more than a colony. The Britons treated them as lesser individuals and like a small grouping/gathering of people. This angered and frustrated the Americans, and even so, the British stopped ships, limited economic or trade opportunities with port blockages, and prevented the West from developing quite a lot.
