sun
evaporation is what change of state
liquid to gas
What is precipitaiton
water in the liquid form falling from the atmosphere
What force causes rain, and for streams to move downhill
gravity
Will water on earth run out one day. Explain
No because water is always being recycled in the water cycle.
What is condensation
When water vapor turms back into a liquid
What is crystallization
When water vapor turns quickly into a crystallized solid (like snow)
Where does 75% of precipitation land
in the ocean
What do we call an area on earth that stores water. Provide an example
reservoir
Ocean
Why do we hang clothes in the sun to dry rather than in a dark closet
The sun heats up the water allowing for it to speed up the water particles and cause them to turn into a gas. (evaporation)
Explain Evaporation
Evaporation is when thermal energy is added to the top layer of a liquid and causes the particles to move faster, and eventually break their bonds.
What causes clouds
When water droplets or crystals are clustered in the sky and the sun reflects off of them
what is an aquifier
an area of permiable rock that holds water underground.
What happens to the total amount of water on earth and in the atmosphere
they stay constant
How does climate change effect the water cycle
It changes how water will enter and leave the atmosphere
Explain the 4 subsystems of Earth
Atmosphere- air/gas
Biosphere- living things
Geosphere- rocks/nonliving things
Hydrosphere- water
Explain how you helped the water cycle today
by breathing
What is an oaisis (oases)
An area where ground water has moved closer to the surface and eventually comes onto the surface.
Where does all water that is not evaporated eventually end up
ocean
Why do we need to focus on preventing water pollution before it happens?
Since water is constantly being recycled once pollution enters into the water, it is hard to track and could take a long time to clean it up.
Explain2 of the 3 ways discussed in class that water enters into the atmosphere besides evaporaation
Transpiration (plants removing extra water as water vapor through their leaves)
Respiration (animals breathing out water vapor)
Decomposition( water vapor leaving tissue and muscle of dead organisms.)
When Water vapor turns into snow what happens to the thermal energy
the energy decreases
Where can ground water be found
either right below our feet making moist ground, or 100 of meters under the surface making it dry like the desert.
We are not drinking the same water that dinosaurs did
I disagree, because of the water cycle water is constantly being evaporated, condensed, then coming back to earth. This does not create new water but is just reusing the water from the past
What aspect of the water cycle could turn undrinkable salt water into usable water?
Evaporation, when water is evaporated only water vapor is taken into the atmosphere, any other mineral like salt is left behind. So when the water condenses it turns into clean water.
