What is absorption?
When a material sucks up a liquid. :)
100
If it is a day when the temperature is below freezing, what kind of precipitation will you see?
snow
100
Give at least 3 examples of precipitation.
rain, snow, sleet, hail
100
What are the 3 states of matter found on Earth?
Solid, liquid and gas
100
If a lake becomes polluted, which of these are going to be affected: plants, fish, people?
All of them.
200
What is beading?
When a liquid stays on the surface of a material in the form of a bead.
200
Why would a pan have a wood handle?
wood conducts heat more slowly than metal. :)
200
The process by which liquid water changes into water vapor.
evaporation
200
How can you change a solid to a liquid?
add heat
200
Which is a better conductor of heat, metal or plastic?
metal
300
What is surface tension
A skin-like surface of water that causes it to stick together and try to form a bead.
300
What might happen if someone picked up a pan with a metal handle?
They could burn themselves. :(
300
The process by which water vapor changes to a liquid.
condensation :)
300
How can you change a liquid into a gas?
Add heat
300
Name 2 ways you can conserve water.
take shorter showers, turn off the tap when not using the water, use the rain in rain barrels to water your plants, plant rain gardens instead of regular gardens.
400
What does water do as it gets warmer? Colder?
expand/contract
400
How does a thermometer work?
hot water expands and takes up more space, so the liquid inside the thermometer goes up. :)
400
In the water cycle, what is "collection"
lakes, rivers, ocean
400
How can you change a gas into a liquid?
Take heat away. :)

Sam washed his favorite pair of jeans and hung them out to dry. An hour later they were dry. What happened to the water? a. It disappeared and no longer exists. b. It is in the air in an invisible form. c. It is in the clouds.
B

Explain the differences between hot, cold and frozen water in terms of density. Explain why that is important.
Hot water is less dense than cold water, but as water freezes it expands and becomes less dense. This is important because if ice didn't float, the entire lake would freeze and the animals in it would die.

Latisha took a sealed plastic container of ice cubes out of the freezer and put it on the dry counter. She came back later and found that the ice on the inside had melted--the container was full of water. There was also a puddle on the counter. Explain why this happened?
The water vapor in the air cooled when it came in contact with the dish. It condensed and turned into liquid water.

Draw a diagram of the water cycle including the following: evaporation, condensation, precipitation, ground water, run off and collection.
teacher discretion.

Define a solid, liquid and a gas.
Solid--keeps it's shape; its molecules are tightly packed together. Liquid--Takes the shape of a container; its molecules stay together, but not as tightly as a solid. Gas--Takes up as much space as it possibly can; its molecules move away from each other.

A family went camping and knew there was going to be a rainstorm at night. They decided to put their tent at the bottom of a big hill next to a creek. The next morning their tent was full of water, but the creek didn't get high enough to touch the tent. What happened?
The water ran off the hill and flooded their tent.
