“There isn’t any danger here, at this moment. But it’s coming. The field! It’s covered in blood!”

Fiver- His first premonition warns Hazel that humans will develop their home into a residential area. If they don't leave, they will die.

100

“What a shame! Poor fellow, perhaps he ought to go home and rest. Well, it’s been extremely good of you to come and see me, Walnut. And I shall think over all you’ve said most carefully…”

Threarah- Although he pretended to entertain Hazel and Fiver in his chamber, he was uninterested in Fiver's warning.

100

“You’re under arrest for spreading dissension and inciting to mutiny. You’re both to come with me.”

Captain Holly- He attempted to stop the rabbits from leaving the Sandleford warren. He accused Bigwig of inciting mutiny.

100

“That’s a piece of flat wood. We could put Fiver and Pipkin on it and make it float again.”

Blackberry- He proves his wisdom by safely getting the rabbits across the Enborne River. Pipkin and Fiver survive because of Blackberry's wit.

“But what I’m trying to explain is that at night the hrududil have great lights, brighter than Frith himself. They draw creatures towards them, and if they shine on you, you can’t see or think which way to go. Then the hrududu is quite likely to crush you. That’s what we were taught in the Owsla.”

Bigwig- Although Bigwig has worldly experience, his reasoning is lacking. He states roads are only dangerous at night.

200

“We don’t believe you know where we are going. You didn’t know about the road, did you? And you don’t know what there is in front of us.”

Hawkbit- Hawkbit, Acron, and Speedwell attempted to lead a mutiny against Hazel. They claimed that he was an unfit leader.

200

“That’s the place for us, Hazel. High, lonely hills, where the wind and the sound carry, and the ground’s as dry as straw in a barn. That’s where we have to get to.”

Fiver- Watership Down lies four miles in the distance. Fiver claims this is the ideal location to raise a family due to its secure location.

200

“There was no need to go biting Hawkbit: he couldn’t have gone back if he’d tried. He and his friends would have seen that if they’d been allowed to talk for a bit. Now, they’ll think they’ve got to go on because he makes them. I want them to go on because they can see it’s the only thing to do.”

Hazel- Hazel's leadership qualities are on full display. He wants rabbits to join/follow him for the right reasons, not out of fear.

“There are plenty of empty burrows in our warren, and if you want to come across, you’ll be welcome.”

Cowslip- He welcomes Hazel to join his warren during their first encounter. The empty burrow comment is strange given the fact that the rabbits are well fed.

300

“He killed a homba. He kills owls, too. We never need to dig. A lot of the burrows are lying empty, you know: rats live in one part, but he man kills them as well. There’s better food here than anywhere else.”

Strawberry- At first, Hazel's crew was puzzled as to why Cowslip's warren was out in the open. The farmer kills all predators, so the rabbits have no incentive to hide. The farmer provides the rabbits with food.

300

“They all seem terribly sad. I can’t think why, when they’re so big and strong and have this beautiful warren. But they put me in mind of trees in November.”

Pipkin- Despite having all their basic needs met, Pipkin declares that Cowslip's warren is empty and dead inside.

300

“I tell you I’ll have nothing to do with the place. The roof of that hall is made of bones.”

“Tell me, since we came here, has Cowslip answered any question you’ve asked him?”

Bigwig- Cowslip's warren refused to answer any questions. Despite Bigwig's bravery, this made him uneasy.

400

“Well, we don’t tell the old, long stories very much. Our stories and poems are mostly about our own lives here.”

Cowslip- His warren only approves of short poems/stories. They don't appreciate the classic tales of El-ahrairah because they don't plan on living long enough to learn these stories and pass them down to the next generation.

400

“For I am ready to give you my breath, my life, the shining circle of the sun and the rabbit.”

Silverweed- Cowslip's poet declares his rabbits are a cult-like crew who are willing to die when they enter the Farmer's garden.

400

“You’ve never learned to obey orders, have you? It’s me, me, me all of the time. — And Now we’ve found a fine warren and go into it without even having to fight, you’ve got to do your best to upset everyone!”

Bigwig- Fiver receives the full brunt of Bigwig's anger. It is a poor lapse of judgment to not acknowledge Fiver's ability to sense danger.

“This is it. The wire’s on a peg and the peg’s in the ground- there, look. We’ve got to dig it out.”

Blackberry- His quick thinking solved the riddle of the snare. He saved Bigwig's life by sending Pipkin and Fiver to dig out the peg.

500

“He wouldn’t come. He told Fiver to stop talking about it.”

Pipkin- Cowslip refused to help or acknowledge any sense of remorse after hearing about Bigwig in the snare.

500

“I’m still alive, Fiver. So are all of us. You’ve bitten through a bigger peg than this one I’m dragging. Tell us what to do.”

Bigwig- He praises Fiver's ability to solve the riddle of Cowslip. Bigwig will be fiercely loyal to Fiver moving forward. He regrets being ugly towards Fiver.

500

“You can come with us. Don’t say any more. Poor fellow.”
