Height of a wave measured from midway between the highest and lowest points
Amplitude
The highest point on a wave is called the _________.
Peak/Crest
Describe the wave in the picture using two vocabulary words!
The wave in the picture is transferring energy. The distance from crest to crest or wavelength looks to be the same. The amplitude, or height of the wave peaks, is also staying the same in the picture. This wave moves in a predictable pattern.
The distance between the same two points on a wave (i.e., crest to crest)
Wavelength
A sound wave is a ___________in the air. The_______________ of the wave determines how the wave sounds to our ears.
vibration
frequency
Write your own definition of the word amplitude and give an example.
Amplitude is the height of a wave from the rest position. An ocean wave with a high amplitude would knock you over at the beach. A wave with a low amplitude would not.
A disturbance that transfers energy from place to place
Wave
When deep in the ocean, the ________________of waves causes objects to move up and down in deep water, rather than moving toward the shoreline.
Your teacher drops a stone into a container of water. Describe what you observe in this demonstration. Use the words wavelength and amplitude to explain the movement of the water.
The stone moves through the water and makes waves. Amplitude is the height of the waves that are moving. When I look from the side, I can see the amplitude of the wave when the water goes up against the plastic container. The wavelength is the space between the peaks of the waves in the water.
A change in an object’s position with respect to time and in comparison to other objects
Motion
Waves transfer___________from one place to another.
energy
Students are using an electric fan to blow air over a pan of water to create waves in the pan. They record their observations in the data table.
The wavelength was effected by the speed of the air
A design or sequence that is repeated
Pattern
When comparing two waves, the wave with the greatest wavelength is the one that has -__________.
the most space between the crests (greater wavelength)
Describe in your own words why the town of Barstow would receive the greatest amount of issues from the earthquake. USE at least 3 scientific terms in your answer.
Barstow is located close to the epicenter of the quake. Furthermore, the closer the lines (waves) the shorter the wavelength, this means a greater force! This is seen next to Barstow. Also, the darkening of the lines means a large amplitude. Barstow was in the heart of the quake and would have received much damage from this quake.
