How fast do electromagnetic waves travel?
300 million meters per second
100
What do waves transfer?
Energy (not matter)
100
When there is a longer wavelength, what is the frequency?
lower

What direction does a s wave move?
up and down or side to side
200
What is amplitude?
maximum distance a wave varies from its rest position
200
What is frequency measured in?
Hertz
200
What is a longitudinal wave?
It is parallel to the direction the wave travels
200
When there is a shorter wavelength, what is the frequency?
higher

What are the low points in a wave called?
troughs
300
What produces an electromagnetic wave?
a vibrating charge (i.e. electron)
300
What does the speed of water depend on?
the strength of the wind that produces them
400
What is a mechanical wave?
A wave that travels only through matter
400
If there is larger amplitude, how much energy is used?higher
higher
400
How fast do sound waves travel?
One millionth the speed of light waves
400
What are two common waves in nature?
water waves and seismic/earthquake waves
400
What is an incident wave?
a light wave approaching a surface at an angle
500
What is a transverse wave?
A wave in which the disturbance is perpendicular to the direction the wave travels
500
What are the high points in a wave called?
crests
500
What is a seismic wave? an earthquake wave/mechanical wave
an earthquake wave/mechanical wave
500

.

What is the main difference between mechanical waves and electromagnetic waves?

Mechanical waves require a medium to travel through, while electromagnetic waves do not.

500
What is a refraction?
The change in direction of a wave as it changes speed, moving from one medium into another
