When we look outside, measuring this tells how hot or cold it is.
What is temperature?
What is weather?
We can measure how hot or cold it is outside using this weather tool.
What is a thermometer?
What two things happen to air when it is heated?
Air expands and rises.
We look outside and it's thundering and pouring rain. Since the weather is terrible, do we have high or low air pressure?
Low air pressure indicates bad weather.
Water that falls from the sky in the form of rain, snow, sleet and hail.
What is precipitation?
Weather conditions over a longer period of time.
What is climate?
If we want to measure the amount of precipitation after a storm we can use this weather tool.
What is a rain gauge?
When we crumpled up a piece of paper and put it in glass. Then turned the glass upside down and submerged it in a container of water. The paper did not get wet, what property of air does the experiment prove?
Air takes up space.
It is sunny and cool outside. Since we have nice weather, do we have high or low air pressure?
High pressure indicates good weather.
Moving air that we measure with an anemometer.
What is wind?
Heatwaves, droughts, floods and tornadoes are examples of this type of weather event.
Name 4 types of weather events.
This tool we used to measure wind speed outside.
What is an anemometer?
We attached a deflated balloon to the top of a water bottle. When you put a hole in the water bottle and squeeze it the balloon inflates. What property of air does this experiment prove?
Air occupies space is proven because squeezing the bottle compresses the air into the balloon, and there isn't enough air bottle to inflate the entire balloon. Once we poke a hole in the bottle the extra air has an escape.
Lake Louise, Alberta has a higher elevation than Coalhusrt. How will the climate be affected by the higher elevation in Lake Louise?
Lake Louise would have a colder climate than Coalhurst.
The amount of water vapour that we measure in the air.
What is humidity?
what is the main difference between climate and weather?
Weather is short term conditions in an area while climate is the long term conditions in an area.
We can use this tool to measure the amount of water vapour in the air.
What is a hygrometer?
We attached a balloon to a water bottle and placed the water bottle into a container of hot water. Then the balloon inflated. What property of air did we prove?
Air expands when heated.
What kind of weather would we expect in a low pressure area?
Clear skies and calm winds. Generally nice weather.
This tells us how heavy the air is.
What is atmospheric pressure?
"Hawaii is tropical and it is usually hot and humid" is an example of this.
What is climate?
We can use this weather tool to measure atmospheric pressure.
What is a barometer?
What two properties of air did we prove when we balanced a deflated balloon and an inflated balloon using string?
We proved that air takes up space by inflating the balloon and that air has mass since the inflated balloon was heavier.
This weather event happens when air flows over the mountains into Alberta and it compresses and becomes a warm, gusty wind.
What is a Chinook?
