What does the line stand for in a climatogram?

Temperature

100

What size area is being described when defining climate?

Large

100

What kind of front is this?

Warm Front

100

What creates wind?

differences in air pressure

100

The temperature to which air must be cooled (at constant pressure) for it to become saturated and dew to begin forming.

Dew Point

200

What is the average rainfall in Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil in the month of July? (INCLUDE UNITS)

75mm

200

What are the 2 main measurements which determine climate?

Temperature and Precipitation

200

What kind of front is this? What is this front?

Occluded Front

200

Air moves from ______ pressure to ________ pressure.

High, Low

200

This phenomenon causes winds to curve to the right in the northern hemisphere and to the left in the southern hemisphere.

Coriolis Effect

300

How much rain does Kano, Nigeria have during the winter? (November-February)

2 cm

300

What happens to temperature and precipitation on the leeward side of a mountain range?

Temperature increase and precipitation decrease.

300

What kind of weather does a Cold Front bring?

Storms

300

What are global winds? Name one.

Global winds are high in the air and thousands of kilometers long.  They cause weather to move in different directions.

EX: Jet Stream, Prevailing Westerlies, Trade Winds, Doldrums, Horse Latitudes.

300

The ratio (in percent) of the current water vapor content of air to the maximum it could hold at that temperature.

Relative Humidity

400

What is the average temperature in degrees Fahrenheit in Portland Oregon in the month of April?

59 degrees Fahrenheit

400

What happens to temperature and precipitation when a location is close to the center of a large land mass?

The temperature range increases and the precipitation decreases.

400

What kind of weather does a stationary front bring? Why?

Clear skies.  Cold and warm air does not mix and therefore does not propel the water cycle.
400

What is the pressure measurement like in the eye of a hurricane?

Very low.
400

The state at which air holds the maximum possible amount of water vapor at a given temperature and pressure.

Saturation

500

According to the average precipitation and temperature of this location, what could you tell me about its proximity to the ocean and mountain ranges?

There are high levels of precipitation and a low range in temperature.  This indicates a close proximity to the ocean.  The high levels of precipitation and low temperatures also indicate that Tofino is on the windward side of the nearest mountain range.

500

Where are the three wet bands and two dry band of latitude?

Wet: 0, 60, -60

Dry: 30, -30

Explain what kind of weather an occluded front causes using the following vocabulary:

lower density, higher density, Warm front, Cold air mass, cold front, showers, thunderstorms.

An occluded front causes rain showers, then thunderstorms.  A warm front pushes into a cold air mass, then is caught from behind by a cold front.  The lower density of the warm front causes frontal wedging, slowly pushes the air mass up above the front side cold mass into the atmosphere causing the rain showers, then the higher density of the cold front in the back pushes the warm air mass up more violently causing thunderstorms.

500

Explain the system which causes the global winds.

Hot tropical regions cause air to rise while cold polar regions cause air to sink.  This pushes convection currents throughout the atmosphere.
500

Temperature changes in a rising or sinking parcel of air caused only by expansion (cooling) or compression (warming), with no heat added or removed from the environment.

Adiabatic Temperature Change
