What is weathering?

The physical and chemical processes that change objects on the Earth's surface over time.

(Break it Down)

100

What is Erosion?

The removal and transport of weathered material from one location to another.

(Move Around)

100

What is Deposition?

The laying down or settling of eroded material.

(Lay it down)

100

What is a landform?

A natural feature on the Earth's Surface.

100

What is rounding?

As rocks bump into one another, it causes the rocks to break down into a round shape.

200

At what pH is water classified an Acid? What Causes Acid Rain?

pH of below 7.

Acid rain is caused by the build up of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The clouds/water vapor takes in the Carbon causing the pH to change, and creating Acid Rain.

200

What controls the rate of erosion?

How fast or slow the wind or water is moving.

200

What causes deposition?

As wind or water slows down, it has less energy and can hold fewer sediments causing the sediments to be laid down, or deposited.

200

How are the beaches formed?

The ocean deposits sand and rocks on our coastlines.

200

What is the definition of a Meander?

A broad, C-shaped curve in a stream.

300

Name two causes of physical weathering and explain how they break down rocks.

Ice Wedging - Water gets into the cracks of rocks. As the water freezes, it forces the rocks to expand and break apart.

Abrasion - The breakdown of rock due to friction. Rocks grinding away by colliding with one another.

Plants: The roots break down rocks.

Animals - Dig into rocks causing them to break down.

300

Explain how rocks are sorted.

Depending on the rate of erosion, rocks get sorted by their sizes.
300

What kind of rocks form over time due to deposition?

Sedimentary Rocks.

As layers of sediments compact together, they form sedimentary rocks.

300

How does groundwater create landforms underground?

As acid rain seeps into the ground, it causing chemical weathering to take place underground. As this happens the acidic water dissolves and washes away the limestone creating caverns.

300

What is the definition of a Delta?

A large deposit of sediment that forms where a stream enters a large body of water.

400

What is Oxidation? What happens during Oxidation?

Oxidation happens when oxygen from the atmosphere combines with other elements in a rock.

Oxidation causes rocks to change to an Orangy Red color. (Rust color)

400

How do glaciers cause erosion?

As glaciers move slowly, they grab sediments and cause them to move.

400

What do we call an area that constantly receives deposited materials?

Deposition environment, or deposition landforms.

400

What are the three types of steams we discussed and how are they different?

Young Stream - Creates V-shaped valleys, and flow rapidly downhill.

Mature Stream - Slower-moving stream that erodes the sides of a stream channel more than the bottom creating a C shaped curve.

Old stream - Moves extremely slow, and is on flat land. It has many different bends/curves.

400

What is the definition of a Longshore current?

A current that flows parallel to the shoreline.

500

What is the difference between physical weathering and chemical weathering?

Physical weathering is the natural breakdown of rocks into smaller pieces.

It does not change the chemical makeup of a rock.

Chemical weathering changes the materials that are part of the rock into new material.

Changes the chemical makeup of a rock.

Come up with your own example of Erosion that happens in Florida.

Answers may Vary.

Beaches

500

Explain how deposition and erosion work together.

Deposition only happens due to erosion occurring.
500

Name 3 different Landforms that are found in Florida.

Rolling Hills, Beach Barriers, Winding Waters, Glaciers, Freshwater Lakes, Wetlands, Coral Reefs.

500

What is the difference between a Dune and a Loess?

A dune is a pile of wind-blown sand. Loess is a crumbly, windblown deposit of silt and clay.
