Samuel F. B. Morse created the telegraph. The telegraph was a way to communicate with others by mapping codes across copper wires to send a message. It was important because it was a fast way to communicate with others and was immensely popular.

The two sides were the Union (the North) and the Confederacy (the South). The South was fighting to break away from the United States and create a new country called the Confederate States of America. The North was fighting to prevent the South from breaking away from the United States of America.

What was the Market Revolution and how did it affect America's economy?
The market revolution was when people bought and sold goods rather than making them just for themselves. This caused a change in the U.S. economy and by the 1840s, the national economy grew more than it had in the last 40 years.

The North's economy was based off of factories and manufacturing. The South' economy was based off of cotton farming. Since the North's economy was based off of factories and manufacturing and not farming, they didn't have a need for slavery like the South did. The South was in high demand for slaves to tend to the cotton fields.

Teenage/young adult girls were the ones who mainly worked in the Lowell mills. Lowell owners set up boarding houses with strict rules regulating personal behavior to attract girls to work in the mills.

In the movie Glory, what were some of the problems the Massachusetts 54th encountered from some of the other soldiers/generals.
The Massachusetts 54th had problems earning respect from other soldiers because they were African American. Therefore they needed to prove themselves worthy to the other soldiers and show that they were just as good of fighters as the white soldiers were. They were looked at as jokes and the other soldiers refused to let them into battle until the middle/end of the movie.

What were the differences between craftsmen production and industrial production (quality, speed, conditions)?
Industrial products are made faster but the quality of each product is the same and average/good. The conditions for the industrial workers was more stressful, louder, and overall worse than the conditions of craftsmen workers. Craftsmen products were made slower and the quality of the work depended on the talent of the worker. The conditions were not very stressful because the master craftsman wasn't yelling/shouting at anyone.

How was the Westward Expansion a major cause for the Civil War.
As states were added to the U.S. the question of what the states would become arose (would they be free or slave states). Until California was added, the government managed to keep the amount of free and slave states balanced. It was important to keep that balance because if it was uneven, the senate would then be uneven and favor one side over the other. When California became a free state, it caused unbalance and in order to keep the slave states happy, the government enacted the Fugitive Slave Act. This caused the North to become upset and they created the Underground Railroad which helped slaves escape. 9 Northern states also passed the Personal Liberty Laws that banned the imprisonment of runaway slaves and guaranteed jury trials for suspected fugitives.
