What is the breaking down of landforms into smaller pieces called?
Weathering
What is the moving of weathered earth to a new place called?
Name three landforms.
Mountains, hills, canyons, valleys, delta's, sand dunes
What land feature is essential for deposition?
Rivers or streams
What is the collecting or dropping of sediment in a new location?
Deposition
How do sand dunes form?
Wind picks up loose, dry sand from the ground and carries it (erosion). When the wind slows down, it can’t carry as much sand, so it drops it (deposition). As more sand gets deposited in the same place, a small pile forms. Over time, wind keeps adding sand, and the pile grows into a dune.
Sedimentary Rock
2 landforms created by deposition.
What is Deltas and Sand Dunes?
Explain two different ways that erosion by water can occur.
Rain, running water (rivers) carrying sediment, rivers flowing over a piece of rock over a long period of time (ex. the Grand Canyon), expanding by freezing into rock cracks and breaking the pieces of rock off
What is a big u-shaped valley that is formed when a river erodes a mountain over millions of years?
Canyon
What are the cause agents for weathering, erosion, and deposition that create landforms?
Glaciers (ice), water, and wind.
What might happen to an area if increased flooding led to a river moving higher and faster compared to a normal time of rain?
The rock on the sides of the river could weather faster.
Landform caused by coastal rock weathered by waves.
What are cliffs?
Name 2 landforms caused by erosion.
Canyons, cliffs, valleys
The Brazos River is the longest river in Texas. After moving through the state, it empties into the Gulf of Mexico. As the river reaches the gulf, what landform would you most expect to see?
Delta
What is physical weathering?
The breaking down of rock into smaller pieces by the action of wind, water, and temperature change (ice).
