What are some important neurotransmitters in mental health?

  • Serotonin:Considered the "feel-good" neurotransmitter, it plays a major role in regulating mood, sleep, and appetite. Low serotonin levels can be linked to depression and anxiety.

  • Dopamine:Often called the "reward" neurotransmitter, it is involved in motivation, pleasure, and feelings of satisfaction. Imbalances in dopamine can be associated with conditions like schizophrenia and ADHD.

  • Norepinephrine: This neurotransmitter is important for alertness, focus, and the "fight-or-flight" response.

  • GABA (Gamma-aminobutyric acid):Acts as an inhibitory neurotransmitter, helping to calm the nervous system and reduce anxiety.

  • Epinephrine (adrenaline):Primarily involved in the body's physical response to stress, also impacting mood and alertness.
