What is civil liberty?
A sphere of freedom that is more limited than natural luberty, but allows individuals to be protected from interference from others
What is the harm principle?
The idea that individuals in society should be free to do what they like, unless their actions cause harm to others.
Is Australia a direct democracy? What does a direct democracy mean?
No. If Australia was a direct democracy, every citizen would have to vote on every issue that comes before parliament.
What does the social contract expect from the government?
The social contract expects the government to protect members of society from harming each other (and itself).
What are the classic rights of liberalism?
Freedom of speech, privacy, freedom of association etc.
What is a liberal democracy?
A political system in which democratically based institutions of government are constrained by liberal-inspired constitutional arrangements, political practices and popular expectations that limit the scope and capacity of the governmental sector.
