There are three dogs. There's a poodle that is 2 1/2 ft long, a dachshund that is 4 ft long, and a pit bull that is 5 1//4 ft long. A woman comes with a schnauzer that is 42 inches long. Which of the other dogs is closest in length to the schnauzer?
Please explain in words and numbers how you solve this problem.
First I need to convert all measurements into inches. There are 12 inches in a foot, so the pookle is 2 1/2 x 12 = 30 inches (1/2 of 12 is 6) The dachshund is 4 x 12 = 48 inches, and the pit bull is 5 1/4 x 12= 63 inches (1/4 of 12 is 3). Therefore, the dachshund is closer in length to the schnauzer since they are only 6 inches in difference.

Looking at the problem below, how can you tell if the product is going to be greater, less than, or equal to the factors of the problem?
1/4 x 2/3
Explain with words and numbers.
I know that the product is going to be less than the factors because when you multiply a fraction by a fraction the number is smaller.
1/4 x 2/3 =2/12
1/4 + 3/12 2/3 =8/12 and the product is 2/12, which is less than both of the factors.

Explain how to solve this problem and solve it.
Yosef wants to buy a shirt for $12.50 and a book for $9.25.
Emma wants to buy a hat for $21.15 and some candy for $8.45.
If Yosef had $20 and Emma had $25, would they be able to buy all these items if they put their money together? If not, how much more do they need?
Explain in words and numbers
Together, Emma and Yosef have $45 ($20 + $25). The cost of all the items they want added together is $21.15 + $8.45 +$12.50 +$9.25 = $51.35, so they do not have enough money. If I subtract $45.00 from $51.35 =$6.35, I can see they need $6.35 more.

What three pets could Avery get for $25.00? She can buy three different pets or three of the same or any combination of three.
Explain with words and numbers.
The total cost of all the pets is $32.30, so Avery does not have enough to buy one of all of them.
Example answer: Avery can buy one hamster $8.30 + one snake $11.25 + one turtle $5.25 for a total cost of $24.80.
