What was "The Great Race of Mercy?

1925, Diptheria outbreak, Nome Alaska.  No medicine.  Nenana had medicine but was 625 miles away.  Sled dog teams were sent out to battle the brutal cold and rugged terrain. They brought back the medicine and saved 1400 people.

What happens to the Wood Frog during the winter, which is very unusual?
