Does the Student Health Center offer testing for COVID-19?
Yes! The SHC offers both PCR tests and rapid tests for COVID-19 for all students. Call to make an appointment.
Where can I find the daily symptom checker?
On the Kalamazoo College MyChart website or MyChart app! Link on the SHC website.
How should I dispose of old/unused medications?
Take them to a medication drop-off site, like the one in the SHC! Never throw them away or flush them, as they can pollute water sources.
What is a travel clinic appointment?
An appointment you make with the SHC to go over important information for maintaining health abroad, receive any necessary prescriptions or immunizations, and get any questions answered by staff.
Name three services offered by the SHC
Assessment, diagnosis & treatment of acute illness, immunizations, contraception counseling & prescribing, diagnostic laboratory testing, pre-travel consultation, wart treatment, allergy injections, physical exams, STI/STD testing, equipment lending (crutches, wheelchair, heating pads), referral to community physicians as needed, and more!
How do I know how many K students have tested positive for COVID-19?
By checking the COVID-19 Dashboard on the SHC website.
What types of payments are accepted?
If you receive a service that requires payment, you may use cash, check, debit/credit cards, or post charges to your student account (payable through Hornet HQ).
What is the difference between quarantine and isolation?
Quarantine is when you minimize all contact with others because you think you may have been exposed. Isolation is when you are sick or have had a positive test result and eliminate contact with others.
What is a Health & Safety Orientation?
A personalized presentation made and updated by the SHC for each study abroad destination. These provide valuable information for students before they leave.

What do I do if I need a COVID-19 test but the Student Health Center is closed?
There is a link to alternative locations offering COVID-19 testing on the SHC website. Among them are WMed, Walgreens, Bronson Methodist (various locations), and other local pharmacies/urgent care facilities.

What are examples of "risky" dietary behaviors abroad?
These may include drinking tap water or using ice made from tap water, eating produce that may have been rinsed with tap water, eating foods that may not be fully cooked, street food, etc.
What immunization is offered free during clinics every fall and winter?
Flu shot
What is the protocol for students who test positive or are exposed to someone with COVID-19?
Students who test positive are relocated to Q/I housing on-campus where they will have their meals delivered and restrict contact with anyone so long as their symptoms are not severe. Students who are exposed are required to stay in their rooms and quarantine if non-symptomatic. If symptoms develop, they will also relocate to Q/I housing.
Will the Student Health Center bill my insurance for cost of services?
The SHC will only bill the Student College Insurance Plan directly. If you have another insurance, the SHC will provide you with an insurance-ready receipt in MyChart.
What is Meningitis B and how can I protect myself against it?
Meningitis B is a rare but devastating infection of the brain and spinal cord, often leading to lifelong disabilities or death. It can be spread through saliva and adolescents and young adults 16-23 are at a higher risk of infection. The SHC offers the MenB vaccine to those who are interested and able to get it.
What are some examples of safer dietary choices abroad?
Safer options include eating fruits you can peel, drinking filtered water, bottled drinks, and cooked foods, especially until your body adjusts to the food wherever you are.
What are three items that you can order for free using the Self-Care Request Form on the SHC website?
Examples include: cough drops, sinus decongestant, ibuprofen, acetaminophen, bismuth tablets for upset stomach, disposable thermometers, band-aids, moleskin, (latex and latex-free) external condoms, latex internal condoms, dental dams, personal lubricant, menstrual products, and sunscreen.
What is surveillance testing for COVID-19?
Students, faculty, and staff are chosen at random for mandatory surveillance testing (PCR) for COVID-19. This is to routinely assess our campus community and prevent any outbreaks. You have to schedule within the week you are chosen and the test is free.
How often must students "opt-in" or "opt-out" of the College health insurance plan (Wellfleet/Cofinity)?
Every year of enrollment. The waiver period is from August-September and if students do not waive before the deadline, they are automatically enrolled.
What do I need to do everyday when going to campus? (Or everyday when you live on campus?)

What is the illness that affects the most students (and travelers) while abroad?
Traveler's diarrhea. This happens to almost everyone! You can pack some anti-diarrheal medications to take with you, and also consider eating unripe bananas, rice, or other foods which may help.
